IOZ is known as one of the earliest graduate training institutions in China (1981), and the key bases for graduate education in CAS. According to an official assessment on the quality of graduate education carried out by an independent organization in 2003, IOZ ranked second in biology in China.

Currently, IOZ has more than 600 graduate students and over 100 postdoctoral fellows. Each Ph.D. student published an average of 2.6 papers by the time of graduation, many of which were published in top journals like Nature series, Science, PNAS, etc.
