The International Conference on Molecular and Evolutionary Biology opens in Beijing
On July 20, 2025, the Annual Meeting of the Society for Molecular Biology&Evolution 2025 (SMBE2025) opened at the Beijing Convention Center. The meeting was hosted by the International Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution (SMBE) and the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and co sponsored by the Bureau of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Mathematics and Systems Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Specialized Committee on Animal Ecology of the Chinese Ecological Society, the Chinese Zoological Society, the Biological Evolution Theory Committee of the Chinese Zoological Society, and other units. This conference attracted more than 1200 researchers from 48 countries and regions around the world, including over 120 academicians and renowned scholars from China and abroad, as well as over 600 international representatives.
Professor Ziheng Yang, president of the International Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution and academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Zhang Yaping, CAS Member, researcher of Kunming Institute of Zoology, Wei Fuwen, academician of the CAS Member, researcher of the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, researcher Liu Weidong, director of the Bureau of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, researcher Zhan Xiangjiang, deputy director of the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former president of the International Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution, professor Stephen Wright of the University of Toronto, Canada, and representatives of the Swiss Embassy in China attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. The opening ceremony was presided over by researcher Zhou Xuming of the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
It is reported that this academic conference is the most well-known international academic conference in the field of evolutionary biology. SMBE2025 is the first international conference on molecular biology and evolutionary biology held in China. The conference includes 5 invited presentations, 35 specialized sub conferences, more than 380 oral presentations, and more than 400 academic posters. The conference will focus on in-depth exchanges of the latest research achievements and cutting-edge scientific issues in the fields of molecular biology, genetic evolution, computational biology, biomedical science, big data, and artificial intelligence.
In order to show the achievements and progress of Chinese scholars in relevant fields in the past decade, the conference also set up a special session for Chinese scholars' report (CMBE) and discipline development seminar, Professor Chung I Wu of Sun Yat sen University, Professor Jin Li, academician of the CAS Member and president of Fudan University, academician of the American Academy of Sciences, Professor Scott Edwards of Harvard University, academician of the American National Academy of Sciences, Professor Michael Lynch of Arizona State University, Professor Sudhir Kumar, director of the Genomics and Evolutionary Medicine Research Center of Temple University, Professor Jianzhi (George) Zhang of the University of Michigan, elected president of the International Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution, and Julie of the University of Cologne, Germany Professor tte de Meaux and others attended the seminar.
