IOZ jointly holding the Training of Ecological Management of Pests in Philippine
[ 2007-04-17 ]

A 2-week training on Ecological management of pests (rodents, insects, and weeds)?biological, economic, and social dimensions was held at IRRI, 19-30 March. This training was sponsored by the Irrigated Rice Research Consortium, and Institute of Zoology (IOZ), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS)with the purpose of accelerating the international cooperation and layout in the fields of agricultural pests control and biological diversity in Southeast Asia. Fourteen participants from Belgium, Cambodia, China, India, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, United Kingdom, and Vietnam attended and successfully completed the course.

Prof. Zhang Zhibin, the director of IOZ, CAS introduced the main achievements harvested by IOZ in the recent years, and made a speech about the ecological function of rodents in the ecosystem. Qin Qilian, the associate professor of IOZ, made a speech about the mass production of insect virus pesticide. Chinese officers from State Forestry Administration and Institute of Subtropical Agriculture of CAS participated in the training. The training covered an integrated ecological approach to pest management, which includes a combination of rodent, insect, and weeds management as well as the social and cultural dimensions of technology transfer.
