Invited Talk: The Potential of Human Male Germ Line Stem Cells

  Speaker: Martin Dym, Ph.D., Professor

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology,

Georgetown University, School of Medicine, Washington, DC, United States

  Time: 9:00 am, October, 20th, 2009

Place:  Institute of Zoology, Building D, Room 122

Contact: Chunsheng Han, Ph.D., SKLRB, Tel: 64807105, Email: hancs@ioz.ac.cn

Dr. Martin Dym’s main research interest is understanding the factors that regulate the renewal and differentiation of the spermatogonial stem cells. The overall interest of the laboratory is to understand the process of mammalian spermatogenesis with special focus on spermatogonial stem cell regulation, genetic modification, and transplantation. Dr. Dym is pursuing studies of stem cell factor and other ligands, such as leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), which may be important for spermatogonial development. In addition, he is studying gene expression in isolated type A spermatogonia and in seminiferous tubules in culture using serial anaylsis of gene expression (SAGE) and DNA array procedures in response to ligands. He has used telomerase and stem cell factor to immortalize germ cell precursors for in vitro growth.
