Academic Report: DNA barcodes, species limits and the study of biodiversity patterns
[ 2012-08-27 ]

Title: DNA barcodes, species limits and the study of biodiversity patterns

Speaker: Prof. Alfried P. Vogler (英国帝国理工学院)

Time: 2012.8.27 2:00pm

Place: IOZ B105

Professor Alfried Vogler has a joint position at the Natural History Museum and at Imperial College, London. He is one of the most important leaders of molecular phylogenetic research of Coleroptera and other field. His main interest is in the phylogeny and evolution of Coleoptera (beetles), arguably the largest radiation of animal species on Earth. He uses DNA sequences and phylogenetic analysis to study a wide range of questions to explain the great diversity of beetles, at all hierarchical levels, from populations to basal relationships of the order. In addition, he develops DNA-based approaches as short-cut for taxonomy, in particular in poorly known tropical groups. He has very comprehensive experiences collaborating with international colleagues. He has trained many international Master/ PhD students who are from America, Spain, Germany, Japan, China and so on. He has published many outstanding papers in many famous journals such as Sciences, Systematic Biology, Nucleic Acids Res., Molecular Ecology.
