A Series of Environmentally Benign and Pollution-Free Baculoviral Insecticides Been Successfully Developed in China
[ 2008-03-05 ]

Recently, three baculoviral bio-insecticides trademarked as KEYUN, developed by the cooperation between Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOZ, CAS) and Henan Jiyuan Baiyun Industry Co., Ltd. (HJBI), were authorized with registration and producing admittance by National Ministry of Agriculture and National Development and Reform Commission, respectively. These three bio-insecticide products, as the highest virus concentration and the lowest dosage products among coordinate products reported all over the world, have been demonstrated and utilized in the north-west and the south of China, covering the area around 130,000 hectares. Significant benefits of society, economy and ecology have been achieved in the application of the three baculoviral bio-insecticides in practice. The success of development and application of the products sets a landmark in the course of industrialization and marketing of the baculoviral bio-insecticides in China.

The three registered products are mainly applied to control the cotton bollworm, the oriental tobacco budworm, the beet armyworm and the common cutworm that infest in the fields of vegetables and tobacco. The scientific names of the bio-insecticides are 60b PIB/g Helicoverpa armigera (its common name is cotton bollworm) nucleopolyhedrovirus water dispersible granule (60b PIB/g HaNPV WDG, accession number: LS20071438), 30b PIB/g Spodoptera exigua (the common name is beet armyworm) nucleopolyhedrovirus water dispersible granule (30b PIB/g SeNPV WDG, accession number: LS20071689) and 20b PIB/g Spodoptera litura (the common name is common cutworm) nucleopolyhedrovirus water dispersible granule (20b PIB/g SpltNPV WDG, accession number: LS20071905), whose bio-active ingredients are normally 15 to 20 times more than those of coordinate products. The high concentrated bio-active ingredients of the products make unit dosage ranging from 45 to 75g per hectare.

The agreement of cooperation between IOZ and HJBI was signed in 2003 to industrialize baculoviral insecticides with proprietary intellectual property rights. The technical system for industrial production of certain insects was invented, which ensures that a large quantity of host insect could be provided for virus amplification. Researchers in IOZ broke through the technical bottleneck of baculovirus purification in industrial scale, which significantly enhanced the concentration and improved the quality of baculovirus raw powder. Industrialization of several baculoviruses raw powder (technical material) was turned into reality (The first baculoviral bio-insecticide technical material was registered by HJBI in 2004). Researchers adopted the advanced processing technique of water dispersible granule formulation (WDG) into processing baculoviral bio-insecticide formulation for the first time inland. The techniques to develop the WDG formulation involve the techniques of granulitization in low-temperature and coating the viral polyhedra with nano. The ability in anti ultra-violet of the formulation products is enhanced. The baculoviral bio-insecticides are very effective in controlling the related pests in the field.
