Brief Introduction

Institute of Zoology (IOZ), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), is a government-funded research institution in zoological sciences. It has a long history of over 80 years. The predecessor of IOZ was Fan Memorial Institute of Biology founded in 1928. Many distinguished scientists including thirteen CAS Academicians started their research career in IOZ. Some of them are founders of various sub-disciplines of zoology in China, such as Professor Bing Zhi, first director of IOZ and one of the main founders of modern biology in China. Several sub-disciplines in zoological sciences in China were derived from IOZ, such as entomology, animal ecology, and experimental embryology. IOZ also has a long history of service to the country with many significant contributions, such as successful control of China’s chronic agricultural pest-locust, control and management of other pest insects and rodents, establishment of nature reserves in China, conservation of giant panda, crested ibis and other endangered wildlife, reproduction and contraception, and fish nuclear transfer.

Since implementation of CAS Knowledge Innovation Program, IOZ experienced rapid development in scientific research in recent years. Currently, IOZ has three state key laboratories and two CAS key laboratories, namely, State Key Laboratory of Integrated Pest Management, State Key Laboratory of Stem Cell and Reproductive Biology, State Key Laboratory of Membrane Biology, CAS Key Laboratory of Animal Ecology and Conversation Biology, and CAS Key Laboratory of Zoological and Systematics and Evolution. Zoological Museum of IOZ has over 6.1 million animal specimens. Several field stations and research bases also play important role in IOZ research programs.

IOZ has a staff of 420. Among our competitive research staff, 75 scientists are professors. We have 531 postgraduate students and 113 postdoctoral fellows. Several major achievements have been recognized nationally or internationally in the fields of reproduction and development, animal clone, control and management of pest insects and rodents, monitoring and control of invasive species, prevention and control of wildlife-borne infectious diseases, conservation of wild animals, and biopesticide industrialization.

There are five societies and organizations affiliated to IOZ, including Zoological Society of China, Entomological Society of China, International Society of Zoological Sciences, Editorial Committee of Fauna Sinica, and Chinese Endangered Species Scientific Commission, PRC. IOZ and these societies jointly publish seven academic periodicals. Insect Science, Integrative Zoology, and Current Zoology are SCI indexed journals. Acta Entomologica Sinica, Acta Zoologica Sinica, Acta Zootaxonomica Sinica, and Chinese Journal of Applied Entomology are domestic authoritative journals.

We aim to make IOZ a competent and internationally recognized research organization under the circumstances of economic globalization and rapid development of science and technology. Our research efforts have been directed to address both basic science and applied research to meet the national and public demands in the field of agricultural, biodiversity, ecology, human health and reproductive biology. We especially focus on control and management of pest insects and rodents, prevention and control of wildlife-borne infectious diseases, zoological systematics and evolutionary biology, conservation of rare and endangered animals, reproduction and developmental biology, and molecular breeding of livestock. We welcome bright young scientists to join us, and will provide them good scientific environment and research conditions.
